This program is designed to encourage health professionals to acquire research training as part of a university Master's or doctoral program. All health themes are eligible, regardless of proposed methodology or models.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Eligible applicants

-Applicants with a professional university degree in a health sciences discipline and a valid licence to practise in Québec

-Resident physicians (recognized by Quebec’s Collège des Médecins) wishing to interrupt clinical training to undertake research training

Health professionals without a valid license to practise in Québec must apply to the Master's or Doctoral Training program.

-Canadian citizens or permanent residents domiciled in Québec (as defined in the Common Rules and Regulations, art. 1.1), on the date the award becomes effective, or by June 30, 2005

This status must remain in effect for the duration of the award.

Terms and conditions

-Must be enrolled in a full-time Master's or doctoral program, in a Québec university, as of January 15, 2006.

Applicants may enrol in a Canadian university outside Québec or in a foreign university, if the advantages provided by that institution can be demonstrated.

-Must submit a health research project and be supervised by an independent investigator (as defined in the Common Rules and Regulations, art. 1.2)

-Must devote at least 75% of his/her time to research and training activities

Applicants are not required to complete a CV.

-Two letters of recommendation signed by professors having participated in the applicant’s training

Applicant

-Official academic transcripts, or certified copies of originals, for all university courses taken, whether completed or not

Resident physicians: must include residency evaluations

For transcripts originating outside North America, include a letter explaining the grading system used by that institution.

-Proof of membership in a professional corporation and of licence to practise in Québec, submitted by June 30, 2005, and each subsequent year, for the duration of the award

For professions issuing licences in October (e.g. pharmacists and physical therapists), applicants must advise the FRSQ prior to June 30, 2005, by means of a letter co signed by the research supervisor.

-Copies of award notices received, other than FRSQ awards, during the past four years

-Confirmations from publishers regarding manuscripts submitted and agreement to publish

-Certified copy of permanent resident card, if applicable, submitted by June 30, 2005

Application update

The applicant may update his/her list of publications until December 5, 2004.

Applicant will receive e-mail confirmation of receipt of application, including notice of eligibility, by latest December.

TRAINING LOCATION

Choice of training location

Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a Master's or doctoral program in a recognized Canadian or foreign university.

Change of training location

Awardees wishing to change their training location must send the FRSQ a written request detailing the reasons for the change and describing the new research project.

The new research supervisor must

-provide the FRSQ with written agreement to supervise the awardee

-send the FRSQ a paper copy of his/her Common Canadian CV

DURATION OF AWARD

Effective starting date

Between April 1, 2005 and January 15, 2006

Master's award

2 years or until completion of Master's studies, whichever comes first

Only applicants enrolled in graduate studies for one year or less, as of the effective starting date of the award, are eligible for Master’s awards.

This eligibility period may be deferred for up to one year for students who have interrupted their studies to take parental leave.

Awardees continuing on to doctoral studies may use any remaining portion of their Master's award toward those studies.

Doctoral award

3 years or until completion of doctoral studies, whichever comes first

Parental leave

Awardees are entitled to 6 months of paid parental leave (maternity, paternity or adoption), in which case the duration of the award will be extended by 6 months. If both parents are awardees, only one of them is entitled to paid parental leave. Awardees taking parental leave must suspend their university enrolment.

Awardees must give the FRSQ written notice of their intention to take parental leave and must send a copy of this letter to their research supervisor. Official attestation of suspended enrolment must be sent with the letter to the FRSQ.

Sick leave

In case of serious illness, awardees may defer their award upon presentation of a medical certificate. Payments will stop during that period.

AMOUNT OF AWARD

Amount

$25,024 - $39,323/year, depending on the year the professional degree was earned

Administration

These awards are exempt from Québec income tax but are taxable by the Canadian government.

The awards are paid in instalments at the applicant’s training location.

OTHER SOURCES OF INCOME

Authorized paid work

The awardee may supplement his/her income through professional activities, provided that he/she devotes at least 75% of his/her time to research or research training and that the source of the income is not a FRSQ grant.

Insitution or supervisor

The awardee may accept additional funding from the institution or his/her research supervisor.

AWARDEE'S AGREEMENT

 

In accepting this award, the awardee agrees to observe the Common Rules and Regulations, as well as the terms and conditions stipulated in this Program Description.

The award will be revoked if the awardee fails to observe these rules.

The awardee must notify the FRSQ of his/her acceptance of the award within 30 days of receiving the offer.

Failure to give notice of acceptance will be regarded as refusal of the award.

The awardee agrees to provide official proof of enrolment from the Registrar's Office at the start of each academic year.

SUPERVISOR'S AGREEMENT

 

The research supervisor agrees to oversee the awardee’s work and to provide the material and financial resources required for the research project.
