Research on Genomics and Diseases
FRSQ – GQ – NSFC Collaboration

Deadline
Submission of the application: August 16, 2010
(10 a.m., Montréal time or 10 p.m., Beijing time)

The purpose of the call for proposals is to foster networking and collaboration among Quebec and Chinese researchers in order to support innovative international research projects focusing on genomics and diseases, involving Québec and China. This competition is launched as a follow up initiative to the Joint Workshop held in Beijing in October 2009.

In light of existing skills and resources in the area of genomics and diseases, joining Quebec and China capacities in this field is of high interest and will benefit scientists in both countries. This bilateral collaboration, through jointly funded research projects, will encourage major scientific breakthroughs in the short and medium terms by combining and potentiating the strengths and sources of structural leverage of both countries, complementary scientific expertise as well as foster knowledge translation. It is the intent of the partners that the selected projects will serve as a starting point for much larger and also longer collaborations between scientific teams in Quebec and China.

This call for proposals is led jointly by:

-Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ), in partnership with Genome Québec

-National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)

The proposals must be submitted to both FRSQ and NSFC simultaneously.

The conditions and requirements specific to each research funding agency are available in the Toolbox and on the agencies’ websites.

SCOPE

Objectives

The strategic objective of this bi-national call for proposals is to promote synergy and added value by establishing high quality, interdisciplinary research and highly innovative collaborations between researchers in China and Quebec.

The aim of the research projects is to generate knowledge leading to better understanding the role that genomics plays in human diseases.

Proposed projects must:

-Bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines, areas of expertise and research settings and with an array of cutting edge approaches, and

-Cover fields where the interests and strengths of the researchers are already proven.

The projects will have to be structured so as to contribute a key added value that the researchers, funded solely by their research funding agency, could not achieve on their own.

Priority themes

In this call for proposals, the emphasis is on, but not restricted to, the following five major research themes:

-To determine the functions of non-coding DNA/RNA including alternative splicing mechanisms by genomic/proteomic approaches

-To understand the role of the host and the pathogen in infectious diseases by genomic/proteomic approaches

-To improve disease gene identification and functional validation by genomic/proteomic approaches

-Mapping of the Human interactome

-To develop new approaches in the use of next generation sequencing in Genomics/proteomics

ELIGIBILITY

Conditions

Research teams applying to this call for proposals must consist of researchers working in eligible institutions under the conditions and requirements of the relevant research funding agency.

Multiple applications

An investigator may participate in only one application under this call for proposals.

Research team structure

The project research team is to be structured as follows:

-Two Principal Investigators (one from Quebec and one from China) who will represent the project and be responsible for management of the application and for the project’s internal scientific management;

-Each Principal Investigator will be responsible for managing the project as well as reporting on the scientific and financial aspects with regards to the specific agency in question and co-investigators.

Each project research team must comprise:

-At least one researcher from China and one researcher from Québec

-And no more than eight investigators in total including the two (2) Principal Investigators.
